The first thing that one must do is admit that there is a problem.  Understanding addiction is the only way to know if a person has an addiction or not.  The understanding and aspects of addiction has evolved with more complex information in the past few decades.  The understanding of what it is has helped to create facilities and programs that have proved beneficial and successful.  Addiction is a disease.  There are many different types of addiction and some may require a physician intervention in the program.  During any program there is normally a detoxification period that starts in the beginning of the therapy.  A physician can be needed during this process.  This is because some substances that a person is addicted to can have serious and major side effects.  These side effects can affect the major organs in the body including the heart, liver, lungs and more.  A doctor can administer medication that can help with these side effects and the major problems in the body that can arise with the detoxification process.
